Does your medicine contain Tylenol?
You may soon notice changes to several over-the-counter (OTC) and prescriptions medications that contain acetaminophen; some products may even be removed from pharmacy shelves all together. Two of the main reasons for these changes are:

1) Acetaminophen is considered to have a “narrow therapeutic window,” meaning that the toxic dose of acetaminophen is not much higher than the therapeutic (pain-relieving) dose.
2) Many OTC and prescription products contain acetaminophen, including those that consumers use for cold and flu, sleep, and headaches. Unfortunately, many people do not realize this, and they may inadvertently take more acetaminophen than their bodies can handle.

Official guidelines for product manufacturers and pharmacies are not yet out. You can expect to see limits on how much acetaminophen products may contain, acetaminophen in fewer products (especially in medications for children), warnings on products that contain acetaminophen and lower recommended daily doses by your pharmacist or doctor.

You should read labels carefully on all acetaminophen-containing OTC products and prescriptions to find out how much acetaminophen you are taking. If you aren’t sure, you can always ask your pharmacist for help!
