Herbal Cold Prevention!

It’s that time of year again when cold viruses
frequently find their way to Community Pharmacy, accompanied by their sniffling, sneezing, and miserable human hosts. Colds are a huge moneymaker for the drug industry. An estimated 62 million colds per year leave millions of sick people roaming the aisles of pharmacies and grocery stores, desperate for relief. The cold virus, or Rhinovirus (RV), is transmitted via aerosol particles to hands, eyes and noses. Nasal epithelial cells are like a cozy little cottage for RV, providing the ideal pH and temperature for attachment and replication. A single sneeze may contain 20,000 viable droplets of RV that can be stable for 3-6 hours outside a host. That’s a lot of cold virus sitting on door knobs and checkout counters waiting for the next victim!
Cold symptoms start about 24-36 hours after infection. Affected cells trigger vasodilation, a natural part of the immune response, which leads to cough and runny nose. A healthy immune system will destroy most viruses within two days of infection. Within three to five days cold symptoms gradually diminish as cells start to heal from the inflammatory response. Collateral cell damage creates an opportunistic environment for secondary bacterial infection, which is why it’s crucial to rest, hydrate, and nourish the body during this critical period.
Obviously, cold prevention practices are easier said than done.
Here are a few simple tips that can help keep pesky RV (as well as other viral and bacterial pests) at bay.
1.- Stay well hydrated. Not only does dehydration weaken the immune response, it also impedes the function of mucus membranes in the nose and throat that protect us from invading viruses and bacteria.
2.- Eat high fiber and fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, live sauerkraut, and kimchee every day. They support healthy gut microflora, which are an integral part of a strong immune system. Also consider taking a probiotic supplement. Research shows that regular probiotic use appears to lessen the chance of developing an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).
3.- Have your vitamin D levels checked. Depending on the outcome, you might discuss the use of a vitamin D supplement with your health care provider. Vitamin D activates immune cells called T cells that kill foreign pathogens like RV. Low D levels keep the T cells from doing their job and are associated with a higher risk of URTI.
4.- Wash hands frequently and keep them away from your nose and eyes. This is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of RV.
Looking for some additional support during cold season? I’ve listed three of Community Pharmacy’s favorite herbal cold busters below.
Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) has been used in its native Southeast Asia for centuries as an immune stimulant, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and liver tonic herb. Current research shows andrographis to be very beneficial to the immune system, stimulating the immune response to infectious diseases of the respiratory tract. Its anti-inflammatory properties help calm the body’s natural inflammatory response to RV, lessening unnecessary cell damage and the subsequent discomfort of cold symptoms. When taken at the onset of symptoms, andographis has been shown to significantly shorten the course and duration of the common cold. For acute infections, a dosage of two grams daily has been shown to be most effective.
Energetically, andrographis is a cooling herb; herbalists and naturopaths feel it works best when combined with warming herbs like ginger, cinnamon, and astragalus. In Southeast Asia andrographis is a tenacious tenant of farms, fields, roadsides, and even seashores. This extreme ease of cultivation means it’s unlikely to be overharvested.
Echinacea (E. angustifolia, E. purpurea, E. pallida) is like a “designer herb” designated for the part of the immune system that targets RV. Commercial echinacea preparations made primarily from E. purperea and E. angustifolia are widely used for the treatment and prevention of URTIs. Some years ago echinacea received a bad rap based on negative outcome studies published in reputable medical journals. This confused practitioners and consumers who found echinacea beneficial to lessening symptoms and shortening the duration of colds. It turns out these studies overlooked critical aspects of proper echinacea use. Harvest conditions, processing, manufacturing, as well as the part of the plant used, will determine how it affects the immune system.
Echinacea Roots differ clinically from the aerial parts (flowers, seeds, leaves, and stems). Current consensus is that polysaccharides and/or lipoproteins in aerial parts of the plant have more immune-stimulating effects, while the roots block the inflammatory response and therefore lessen the cascade of symptoms it causes. Herbalists familiar with the most recent echinacea research recommend frequent dosing with echinacea root during the acute stages of a cold or flu. Lower doses of the aerial parts are generally reserved for stimulating and strengthening the immune system throughout cold season.
Black Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) berries are like tiny vehicles custom built to transport immune-boosting flavonoid compounds. These flavonoids help the body block RV and other respiratory viruses from attaching to the host cell wall, preventing it from entering and starting the viral replication process. Recent research has shown elderberry to be highly effective against various influenza viruses. An added benefit is that it boosts immune messenger cells called cytokines that trigger a healthy immune response to viral infections like RV and influenza. Perfectly safe for daily consumption, elderberry preparations are available as tinctures, capsules, lozenges, and syrups. I like to make cordials from fresh or dried berries.
Hopefully the cold prevention tips and herbal allies I’ve discussed will help keep you healthy this winter. Stop into Community Pharmacy to browse our expansive selection of immune support products and let us help choose the right one for you. As always, it’s a good idea to check with your practitioner before taking any supplement.

Elderberry: Your #1 Herbal Ally This Cold Season!

echinaceaDuring these long winter months, supporting your immune system is essential to avoiding the whirlwind of viral illnesses moving around. Many plants can facilitate recovery and help prevent colds and the flu, including elderberries.

Historically, Elderberry has played a significant role in European herbalism, most notably for treating colds and the flu. Their use dates back to Pliney the Elder and Hippocrates. These gorgeous red berries appear mid to late summer in temperate climates, arriving at just the right time to prepare for the colder months to follow. Traditionally they are prepared in the form of a syrup which prevents the berries from spoiling, as sugar is a preservative. It makes a delicious medicine, and changes the berries’ chemical structure to prevent digestive problems that come from eating the berries uncooked.

As with everything, especially in the miniature solar system of compounds found in plant medicines, the way they work in the human body is very complicated. Traditional use and modern studies can help to triangulate the best ways to use herbs.

When some viruses, including the flu virus, invade cells, they use what are called hemagglutinin spikes to sneak past the defenses of cells so that they can replicate inside the cell and spread. One study suggested that elderberry can actually inhibit these spikes and stop the virus from replicating. This is generally understood to be one of the main mechanisms of action of elderberries. They have this amazing protective power to head off some viral infections by essentially stopping the viruses from being able to infect host cells. Several smaller studies have demonstrated this: one study found that an elderberry supplement reduced both the symptoms and duration of colds in air travelers and another study found that an elderberry syrup shortened flu symptoms by four days when compared to a placebo group.

In addition, elderberry could upregulate the immune system to kill viruses and bacteria more quickly. The immune system communicates with itself using chemical messengers called cytokines. These cytokines are signaling molecules that tell the cells of your immune system to do a variety of things. One study using petri dishes showed that elderberries can increase particular cytokines including IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-8, all of which cause inflammation. Inflammation can be useful in that, generally speaking, it causes increased blood flow and an increase of immune cells to an area.

Inflammation can cause you to feel the symptoms associated with illness, including fever and pain. Elderberries contain high amounts of anti-inflammatory polyphenols, flavones and anthocyanins which reduce some of the inflammation your body produces when you’re sick. So, elderberries have the paradoxical effect of both increasing the inflammation that helps kill invading pathogens and decreasing free floating inflammation that makes you feel so terrible.

So, if there’s one thing to remember about elderberries: load up when you feel a viral illness coming on! An elderberry syrup can help upregulate the immune system in order to better fight things off, while simultaneously preventing viruses from replicating within cells. Community Pharmacy sells a variety of elderberry products, including one of my personal favorite syrups from Wish Garden, an Elderberry-Echinacea blend that’s absolutely delicious. We also sell a great Elderberry syrup from Gaia Herbs as well as bulk dried elderberries if you want to make your own medicine. Wishing you a warm and healthy winter season from Community Pharmacy.

What it is CBD?
CBD is a phytocanabinoid contained in the hemp plant. Most products on the market are actually hemp extracts containing a spectrum of constituents, such
as vitamin E, chylorophyll, triterpenes and 50 to over 100 phytocanabinoids, including CBD.
Is hemp extract containing CBD legal?
Yes, hemp extract containing CBD is legal in all 50 states if the product is made from agricultural hemp and contains less than .3% THC (another phytocanabinoid that is psychoactive) bydry weight. The Farm Act Bill of 2014 and the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2016 further support the legality of hemp extract products that contain CBD.
How are hemp extract products containing CBD different from medical CBD?
Hemp extract containing CBD:
•  is made from the hemp plant
• contains the full spectrum of hemp’s constituents
• has very low levels of THC after extraction
• is not psychoactive and does not get you high
• does not need a prescription
• is legal in all 50 states if it is made according to the guidelines stated above
Medical CBD:
• is usually made from marijuana
• contains higher amounts of THC
• is psychoactive and can get you high, depending on the THC levels
• needs to be prescribed by a doctor
• is not legal in all states
How does it work?
Hemp extract affects the endocannabinoid system by activating CB1 and CB2 receptors located throughout the body. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) helps regulate the proper function of a wide range of the body’s processes. The main functions of the ECS are to modulate pleasure, energy, well being, and to help slowly support the body back to health in the face of injury or disease.
Where the endocannabinoid system receptors are found in the body:
• nervous system
• immune system
• digestive system
• endocrine glands
• brain
• heart
• lungs
• kidneys
• liver
• spleen
• bones
• muscles
• blood vessels
• lymph cells and fat cells
What is Hemp Extract used for?
It has been found that hemp extract, when used with people:
• improves focus*
• helps with everyday anxiety*
• supports recovery from exercise-induced inflammation*
• acts as neuroprotective that helps reduce damage to the brain and nervous system and encourages the growth and development of new neurons.
• is an antioxidant that protects cells from the damage of oxidation
It has been found that hemp extract, when used with dogs, helps maintain:
• cognitive function*
• sense of calm*
• blood sugar levels*
• hip and joint mobility*
• a healthy immune system*
If you are using hemp extract with your pets, please consult your veterinarian first. If you are using it with cats, speak to a veterinarian and understand dosing
difference between dogs and cats.
How do I know if my hemp extract is a high-quality product?
It is important that you buy hemp extract from reputable companies. Not all companies have the same standard for quality. Reputable companies will be able to supply you with a certificate of analysis for the product you purchase if you ask them.
Here are some things to look for when evaluating a company:
• 3rd party testing. Third-party certification means that an independent organization has reviewed the manufacturing process of a product and has independently determined that the final product complies with specific standards for safety, quality or performance.
• identity. Use companies that provide verification that the product contains hemp extract and consistent levels of it.
• testing for solvents, microbes, mold, heavy metals, and pesticides.
• solvent and chemical free. Pick products that do not use pesticides
on the hemp while it is being grown and chose companies that use chemical-free extraction methods such as CO2.
What are the different ways I can take Hemp extract?
Some method of
administration                       Pro’s                                                 Con’s
Oil Extract (oral)
  • Makes it easy to vary dose when desired.
  • If held in mouth is quickly absorbed and is fast acting.
  • Flavor for some may not be ideal.
  • You have to remember how much extract is in the serving size you are taking.
Capsule (oral)
  • Consistent dosing.
  • You do not have to taste the hemp extract.
  • You lose some of the hemp extract to the digestion process and more of it is processed by the liver.
  • Takes longer to feel its effects once ingested.
Edibles (oral)

  • Taste good and they create a positive user experience.
  • Take longer to take effect. This can lead to eating a higher dose then you normally would need.
  • Eating too much because product tastes good.
  • You have to keep out of reach of pets and children so they don’t eat it.
Lotion and Balms (topical)
  • A good way to take if someonedoes not want to ingest hemp extract.
  • Only works in the area applied.
  • Can be costly if you are using it over a large area of the body.
Transdermal Patch (topical)
  • Penetrates all seven layers of the skin.
  • They have a longer effect than many other preparations.
  • Can be expensive.
  • Some companies may use chemicals to extract hemp oil; the chemicals would be absorbed into your blood stream.
Vaporizer Pen (inhalation)
  • Fast acting. When vaped, hemp extract effects are immediate.
  • Hard to find suitable pens.
  • Some are single use and create a lot of waste.
  • Some companies use chemicals to extract the hemp extract and these toxic substances can do harm to the body.
  • Effects not long lasting.
How much hemp extract does someone need to take to feel its effects?
This question is as complex as each human is unique. Doses vary by the weight, health, age, and personal chemistry of the individual taking the hemp extract. What can be said is that when someone chooses to try he
mp extract products, they should start with a low dose and gradually work their way up to a dose that is right for them.
Are there side effects of too much hemp extract?
Fortunately, there are no receptors for CBD in the part of the brain that regulates
the heart and respiration. Unlike narcotics, there is no chance of lethal overdose on CBD or THC.
The most commonly reported side effect of taking too much is feeling tired. If this occurs, lower your dose. If you feel you have an adverse effect from
taking hemp extract, listen to your body and STOP. Like anything else you ingest that causes an adverse reaction, stop using it. We are all unique with our own chemistry and everyone has their own personal experience with the things they ingest.
Will it make me high?
CBD does not bind to CB receptors the same way that THC does and does not get you “high”. In fact, it is used to counteract the psychoactive effects of THC.
Will I fail a drug test?
We are learning more about hemp extract every day. Some of the questions hemp extract raises do not always have clear answers. The most responsible answer to this question is that yes, taking hemp extract may make you fail a drug test. If you choose to use hemp extract and you are subject to
drug testing at your job or your medication approval depends on a drug test, please begin an open dialog with your employer and/or doctor about your use of hemp extract oil.
For further clarification about failing a drug test, so far, it appears those who have failed a drug test took hemp extracts that contained high amounts of CBD daily (1000-2000mg). If someone fails aurinalysis drug test (which would be a false positive) further testing (the GC/MS test) can be done to confirm that the patient is not using marijuana.
Will it interact with medications?
CBD and other plant cannabinoids potentially interact with pharmaceuticals that use the bCytochrome P-450 enzymes.
Some Drugs that use the cytochrome P-450 are:
Steroids, HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, antihistamines, prokinetis, HIV antivirals, immune modulators, benzodiazepines, anti-arrhythmics, antibiotics, anesthetics, antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-epileptics, beta blockers, ppi’s, NSAIDs. angiotension IIblockers, oral hypoglycemic, sulfonylureas.
The potential interactions with hemp extract and medications vary. Reportedly, hemp extract may increase circulation of anti-seizure medications and some antidepressants. If you are taking medications, please consult your doctor and pharmacist to see if there are potential interactions.
Are there other ways to support the ECS system?
Yes. Luckily, there are other ways to keep the ECS healthy. Here are some ways you can help maintain a healthy ECS.
1. Eat a diet rich in quality fats.
Monounsaturated fats, medium chain fats and omega 3 fatty acids are all fats that help support a healthy ECS as well as help maintain healthy levels of inflammation throughout the body. Monounsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids increase the brain’s and body’s levels of endocannabinoids, as well as enhance endocannabinoid receptor binding.
You get an enhanced synergistic effect by consuming these good fats with hemp extract.
Some sources of monounsaturated fat foods ( fats liquid at room temp): olive oil, nuts, and avocado.
Some sources of medium chain fatty acids are coconut oil, palm kernel oil, whole milk, and butter.
Some sources of omega 3 fatty acids are fish, fish oils, algae, grass feed beef, walnuts, just to name a few. They enhance the effects of CBD by nourishing the ECS.
2. Avoid fats that easily go rancid and can cause inflammation in the body, such as polyunsaturated fats. Some examples of these inflammatory fats are soy oil, canola oil, peanut oil, corn oil, safflower oil and most vegetable oils.
3. Exercise. Research has found that exercise increases the sensitivity of the cannabinoid receptors in the part of the brain that activates pleasure. When we exercise, we enhance the ECS system. The more we exercise, the more the ECS is s

timulated to pump out hormones that give us a sense of well being.

4. Other herbs that do not contain THC or CBD can support a healthy ECS by their ability to work on the CB receptors. Echinacea (angustifolia) root specifically contains alkamides that work directly on the ECS.
Research has found that these alkamides are very useful for some
forms of anxiety. Ginger root (Zingber officinale) and Magnolia bark (Magnolia officinalis) also help support a health ECS.
