Fish Oil for Immune Health

The overall health benefits of EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fats found in fish oil, are well known.  These important fats have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, improve gut health, inhibit blood clots, lower the risk of heart attacks and contribute positively to healthy brain and nervous system function.  Of special interest these days are fish oil’s benefits for the immune system.

Our friends at Nordic Naturals help us understand this important concept: The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 essential fatty acids that a person consumes directly impacts the health of their immune and inflammatory response. The ratio of fatty acids within their cell membranes directly influences whether the immune response synthesizes pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory molecules. When the immune system is triggered (by injury, allergy, or infection, for example), fatty acids are released from the cell membranes and converted into molecules as part of the body’s natural healing response. EPA and DHA, the omega-3 essential fatty acids in fish oil, support the body’s natural anti-inflammatoryresponse because they are converted into anti-inflammatory molecules. A large body of scientific evidence indicates that fish oil helps to naturally regulate the immune response and support the internal repair systems that operate in response to inflammation.

The ratio is important:

As the American diet has changed over the past century, so has the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fats we consume. Americans are consuming more pro-inflammatory, refined, omega-6 oils (including corn, soy, and safflower oils), while at the same time consuming fewer omega-3 fats from fish, wild game, and plants. In The UltraMind Solution, Dr. Mark Hyman suggests that the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats has increased from 1:1 to 20:1! Most Americans are deficient in omega-3 fats and can benefit from fish oil supplements.

When choosing a supplement, it is essential to invest in high-quality, thoroughly tested products from trusted brands in order to ensure potency and purity (mercury can be found in poor quality supplements). Additionally, freshness and proper storage are essential, as fish oil supplements can go rancid if not properly managed. Think about it -- can you really know, when buying online or from big box stores, for how long and at what temperature your product has been kept?

Community Pharmacy (east Madison) and Community Wellness Shop (Middleton) carry a wide variety of high-quality fish oil supplements in liquids, capsules and chews. Even the pickiest eaters and the most refined tasters can usually find a fish oil that's easy -- even pleasant -- to take. We can help talk you through the options and make the best choice for each member of your family (including pets!).
