Ask Kitty Magoo: Seasonal Breakout Solutions
Dear Kitty,
I’m happy it’s spring but the change in seasons always makes me break out! What can I do?
Signed, Oily in Oconomowoc
Dear Oily,
You’re not alone. I don’t think there’s a single person in the state of Wisconsin who isn’t grateful to put winter behind her, but the transition between seasons can be rough on skin. Oil production is thrown out of wack by the increase in temperature and humidity, often leading to a seasonal breakout. While things will eventually even out, I like to help my skin through the change with a balancing facial oil. Try this one adapted from the website Fresh-Picked Beauty (www.freshpickedbeauty.com):
1/2 ounce argan oil
1/2 ounce jojoba oil
6 drops German chamomile oil
5 drops rose geranium essential oil
3 drops lavender essential oil
Mix carrier oils in a 1 ounce amber glass bottle with dropper top. Add essential oils drop by drop. Cap bottle and shake vigorously to blend. Store in a cool dry place and use within 9 months.
In the event that a break-out occurs, I suggest this spot treatment recipe adapted from Naturally Healthy Skin by Stephanie Tourles:
1 ounce (30 ml) aloe vera juice
2 drops thyme linalol essential oil
3 drops tea tree essential oil
2 drops spike lavender essential oil
1 drop eucalyptus essential oil
Combine all ingredients in a 1 ounce glass bottle and shake well. To use, apply directly to blemishes after cleansing. Store in a cool, dark place.
If you’d rather buy a product than make one, I’m a huge fan of Beautiful Skin Oil by Living Earth Herbs. Not only is it good for seasonal breakouts, it’s working wonders on my pregnancy-induced hormonal acne. Another favorite is the Veriditas Rose Regenerative Facial Oil; Veriditas also makes a stellar essential oil blend called Acne Aid that works great as a spot treatment.
